Vincent James Patrick Sofra

June 5th, 2022

Sofra, Vincent James Patrick (Jim)

Jim Sofra (a.k.a. ‘Sunshine Jim’ or ‘SJ’) passed away in Mission B.C. on June 5th 2022, after years of struggle with MS and diabetes.

Born September 4, 1949 Jim was raised in Ohio and California, and also lived in Oregon and Washington before moving to Canada.  He was pre-deceased by parents Elizabeth (Tropio) and Patsy Sofra.

Deeply loved and much missed by wife Barbara.  Fondly remembered by his daughter Sunshine, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.  Also survived by his siblings Maris, Annie, Jeanine and Michael and their loved ones, as well as many other members of the Tropio and Sofra families.

Jim was an outspoken free thinker who stood in his shoes and forged his own way, and challenged convention at every opportunity.  A skilled jack of many trades and master shipwright who built and restored vintage boats, cars and motorcycles.  A commercial fisherman, logger and environmentalist who lobbied for the protection of fish habitat.  A silversmith, musician and writer. A reader of books and fan of live theatre. A lover of trains, airplanes and anything needing fixing or tweaking.

No service by Jim’s request.  At a future date some of Jim’s ashes will be scattered in Florence, Oregon, once home to his salmon trawler ‘Sunshine’.  If so inclined, a donation in Jim’s memory to his favourite online radio:  freedomslips.com  or an environmental organization of your choice would be much appreciated.

Thank you SJ for your time, wisdom, love for others and sharing your vast library of knowledge. You helped educate, inform, and enjoy the time we have no matter where we are in life You were always a friend. Thank you Barb.

A very beautiful tribute for a very remarkable man, thank you Barb. That wonderful smile shone through your words in chat and on radio. What a privilege it has been for me to have been around for this period and felt have known you much longer. I was so proud and honoured, of how very brave you fought to speak to us all again from your hospital bed. That in itself showed the love you had for your friends and colleagues. My heartfelt and deepest sympathy goes out to Barb and all the family and friends of Sunshine Jim. Rest now in Eternal Peace.

SJ as we commonly knew Jim at Revolution Radio was a cornerstone to this internet station. In the chat room we casually waved across to each other. No matter the topic up for discussion SJ, in his unique style, presented his knowledge and experience for others, often participating in roundtables or guesting on live shows. SJ, we miss you dearly and your funny stories about entertaining the squirrels in your yard. May we one day meet face to face, give each other a hug and have a great conversation!! EagleFlower

We miss SJ and his incredible stories.

! miss you

God Speed SJ! You are a bright and old soul and we will always love your good vibes. See you on the other side my good sir. Salute!

SJ, you are sorely missed. The many hours we spent talking on and off air at Revolution Radio was precious to me. You were my mentor. Thank you.

Thank you Barb for sharing this portrayal of Jim, his interests and his varied background. May these days of transition be healing for you.
