VERNA ELLEN (WRIGHT) CURREY
Oct.12, 1926 - Sept.28,2023
Verna Currey was born in Creelman, Sask. to Helen and Cecil Langdon, the third of 10 children. Her first memory was the long walk (350km in 1934) to the Tisdale area to claim, clear and farm the land given by the government to those caught in the dustbowl depression.
There was no school, but lots of hard work and eventually (at 14 years old) she moved into Prince Albert with an aunt where she apprenticed as a tailor. She could sew and draft patterns for anything- specializing in men’s suits.
Verna met and married Herb (Donald) Wright and had two boys, Darryl (1950) and Brian
(1951) before moving to Vancouver in 1956, where she became a member of the 10th Avenue Alliance Church …. She knew she needed God’s help to raise two boys and to run a household while Herb was an auditor traveling throughout BC.
After 50 years of marriage, Verna moved to Abbotsford and became a member of Seven Oaks Alliance church. When Herb passed Verna’s sisters re-connected her with an old childhood neighbor - Lewis Currey. She returned to her pioneering home where they farmed all summer and wintered in Abbotsford for 10 years.
Verna died just 2 weeks before her 97th birthday, at Menno Home where she had wonderful friends and caring, loving staff. She lived there for 3 years after being given a life expectancy of only weeks. The family wishes to thank the staff for giving our mother those last precious years.
Life was very tough, and Verna committed herself to God’s love and care - she became a prayer warrior for her family. In the last 3 years, she was bed-ridden, unable to feed or bathe herself and often in terrific pain but as God removed her talents, her skills, her freedom and even her ability to read her Bible, she learned and taught us all one simple truth: JESUS IS ENOUGH!
She was pre-deceased by her two husbands and elder son Darryl Wright.
She is survived by her son, Brian (Evelyn) Wright, daughter-in-law Michele Wright, five grandchildren: Matthew Wright, Sarah (Dan) Blois, Ashley (Jon) Griffoen, Courtney (Iyke) Chukkuka, Colter (Carmen) Wright and 10 great grandchildren.
