Emily Saito

With heavy hearts we share the passing of Emily Saito on May 22, 2023, at age 87. She died peacefully after a brief illness with her loving children by her side.

Predeceased by husband Masao "Mush", brother Reg and sister Marian. She will be dearly missed by son Terry (Lillian), daughter Julie, grandchildren Misha and Lukash, sister Lily, extended family, and friends.

Born in 1935 in Ocean Falls, BC, Emily spent her youth in the Slocan Valley during internment, then Alberta as a teen before moving to Richmond, BC with her family. After graduating, she did office work before marrying and settling in Burnaby where she and Mush raised their children. She was a devoted mom, but as her kids grew older, she was keen to return to the workforce. She loved being around children and enjoyed working in elementary schools for many years before retiring. After Mush passed away, she missed him deeply but kept active with varied interests like gardening, karaoke, lifelong learning and proudly walking the Sun Run with her kids (at age 70!). In later years she had happy times at the Fell day program for older adults. 

Emily was clever, curious, creative, kind, loving, funny, generous, and joyful. She had an enduring attitude of gratitude and took great delight in life's simple pleasures. She left a lasting impact on all who were privileged to know her. The memory of her gentle smile and gracious spirit will continue to live on in our hearts forever.

A celebration of life will be held on a future date.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Emily's honour may be made to a charity of your choice.
