Donald McCauley Barclay

Donald McCauley Barclay passed away peacefully on December 11, 2024, at the age of 93, leaving behind a legacy of faith, love, and laughter. Born July 4, 1931, on the family farm near Owen Sound, Ontario, Donald lived a life filled with adventure, kindness, and quiet wisdom.

Donald met the love of his life, Shirley (née Brown), at a community dance in Meaford, Ontario. After just three dates, he knew she was the one. They were married on December 30, 1950, and this month would have marked their 74th wedding anniversary. Together, they built a life rich with love and shared experiences. Donald’s career in pipeline construction took them to various places before he transitioned to heavy equipment sales and service. In 1969, they moved west to British Columbia and settled in Port Kells, Surrey, where they made their home for over 45 years.

Donald was known for his wonderful sense of humor, quick wit, and sparkling eyes that often hinted at an impending joke. He had a calm and gentle demeanor and took a genuine interest in others, always asking thoughtful questions that reflected his care and compassion. A man of steadfast faith, Donald lived his values quietly but fully.

He made friends wherever he went—whether traveling to Arizona as a snowbird, cruising the open seas, enjoying motorcycling trips, or camping with loved ones. His life was enriched by the many people he met along the way and the stories they shared together.

Donald will be dearly missed by his beloved wife Shirley; his loving children Janice (Rick) Reinert, Karen (Ernie) Plett, and Barry (Julie) Barclay; his cherished grandchildren Trevor (Toni) and Jennifer (Marcel); as well as great-grandchildren Hannah and Dean. He is also survived by his sisters Nora Oliver and Isobel Glennie. He was predeceased by his parents Elgin and Henrietta Barclay and his brother Jack Barclay.

Donald’s memory will forever bring comfort and joy to those who knew him. May his legacy of love and laughter continue to inspire all who were blessed to share in his remarkable journey.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada would be most appreciated. An announcement for a celebration of life will follow in the New Year.
