Lucille Irene Shannon
November 13th, 2012
Lucille passed away peacefully on November 13th at the age of 101 years. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Jack Shannon, in 2004. Lucille will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by daughter and son-in-law Beverley and Jack Edwards; son and daughter-in-law Allan and Helen Shannon; grandchildren Kim (Scott), Scott (Cheryl), Kristina (Chris), Alene (Delaney) and John (Anna); great-grandchildren Alexandra, Connor, Ty, Tayler, Jake, Oliver, and Lily. She will also be missed by her Shannon and Banta extended family members.
Lucille was born in Portland Oregon, the second daughter of Ernest and Maude Robinson. Her father passed away at a young age and in 1920. When Maude married Jim Banta, the family relocated to the Madden area of Alberta. Lucille graduated from Normal School and then went on to teach at Banner, Sam Howe and Davenport schools. It was while teaching at Davenport that she met John (Jock) Shannon and on December 24th, 1938 they were married.
Their early years of marriage involved many re-locations including Norman Wells, NWT, where Jack was a foreman for Imperial Oil. In 1946 they settled in Didsbury, Alberta where they remained, raising their family and running Shannon Construction (Alberta) Ltd. Lucille was very involved with the community lending her enthusiasm and skills to substitute teaching, golf, curling and community organizations such as United Church Women, IODE, and Scouting.
In 1975, Jack and Lucille began building a second home at Sicamous, BC and enjoyed many spring and summer months making new friends, hosting old friends and sharing good times with their family.
Lucille enjoyed life, her family and her friends. Her positive attitude served her well over the years as did her amazing memory. “Ask Lucille, she’ll know” was a frequently used directive.
For the past few years, Lucille lived in the Newport Harbour Care Centre in Calgary, where she received the most amazing and loving care.
If so desired, donations in Lucille’s memory may be made to the G.R.I.T. Calgary Society, Suite 4 – 6020 1A Street SW, Calgary, Alberta, T2H 0G3, or to a charity of your choice.
To the family of Lucille, A few years ago my aunt, Faye Williamson, and myself were researching the history of the Quilt that now is framed and hanging in the Madden Hall. We wre trying to find out the history of each lady who had made a square and a little about the ladies themsevles. Somewhere along the line we were pointed to Lucille for imformation. She graciously allowed us to meet with her and was so very imformative in telling the history of the quilt and the people in the Madden area. We really enjoyed meeting her. Without her help and others we wouldn't have completed our project nearly as well. If you ever chance to be in the Madden Hall have a look at the quilt and the history and know that Lucille was one of that gave us the information. It was always fun to have a visit with Lucille. Our condolances to her family. Carolyn Leask Faye Willimson
