George Dennis Swinburne

March 1st, 2018

It is with great sadness the family of George Swinburne announce his passing on March 1, 2018 in Red Deer, Alberta

Born George Dennis Swinburne Oct 12, 1924 in Hartlepool, England, the second child of 9 to Leonard and Lily Swinburne.

He will be forever lovingly remembered by his wife of 42 years - Doreen Swinburne; children Judy (Bill) Kallos and Don Scott (Cathy Martin); grandchildren- Lisa (Ernie) Wilson, Christina (Mike) Tobias, Leah (Dylan) Pinchin, Courtney Scott, Alexandria Scott; great grandchildren- Michael Wilson Kallos, Faith Tobias and Caiden Tobias.

George may have been ‘across the pond’ physically but stayed close and visited as much as possible over the years with his siblings and their spouses: J.R. Dick (Faye), Keith (Tina*), Evelyn (Norman), Aubrey* (Bridget), Lily*(Bill), Trevor* (Madge), Bob* (Betty), and Ralph* (*indicating predeceased) as well as numerous nephews and nieces.

George immigrated to Canada in 1954. He found his way to Calgary, Alberta where he worked for the CPR, making friends with many, especially in the Irish community.  After meeting and having one dance with Doreen in 1975 he knew he’d found the woman he’d been waiting for, his whole life.  With his marriage to Doreen, he willingly took on roll of father and grandfather.  George and Doreen retired in 1984 and moved to Caroline, Alberta where together they created ‘The Acreage’ which became a home of love for many, many gatherings of family and friends for 20 years.  George and Doreen moved to Red Deer in 2003.

Along with our memories full of love, he has left us all with many wooden treasures created in his wood working shop. George loved to be out in nature, often camping/vacationing in their truck and camper.  The highlight of his later years were his grandchildren and great grandchildren.  We are so very grateful he came into our family.

A special thank you to Dr J F Hopfner for all his wonderful years of care. Thank you also to the staff and management of Timberstone Mews for the excellent care over the last 9 months.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Crohn’s and Colitis Canada.

Friends and Family are invited to a Celebration of Life and luncheon to be held Saturday March 10, 2018 at 11:30am.  Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites South - East side of Gasoline Alley, 37471 Hwy 2 Red Deer.
