Darlene Farrow

February 14th, 2022

Darlene Farrow, 77, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 14, 2022 on what was her mother’s birthday, after a courageous battle with supra nuclear palsy. She was born in Esterhazy, SK to Mabel and Thornsteinn Sveinbjorson. She grew up on a beautiful farm outside of Churchbridge with her sister Bertha, and her brothers Norman and Mindy. She later moved to Regina after studying nursing and started her career as a licensed practical nurse.

Darlene met her husband, Warren, on a hot June day, and fell in love shortly after their first date. She was hesitant at the man running across the street to ask her out for coffee, but after a wonderful evening together, Darlene knew it was meant to be. They married in 1965 and had two children, Decklyn and Darcy. As a family, many summer holidays were spent vacationing/camping in Canada’s west, north and Alaska.

A dedicated nurse, Darlene returned to school while raising her family and became a registered nurse, at the same time continuing to work in the operating room at Regina General Hospital. Planning for their retirement, Darlene and Warren purchased a motorhome that would take them on many adventures. When Warren retired from the City of Regina and Darlene from the hospital, they travelled often on long adventures, sometimes months at a time. Some of their favourite destinations were Alaska and the Chilikoot Trail, hiking it twice which was a proud achievement for them, as well as NWT and Yukon. Northern Manitoba’s Flin Flon and Churchill to see the polar bears were also bucket list accomplishments. To the south, they enjoyed destinations such as South Padre Island and Brownsville in Texas, New Mexico, Tennessee, Louisiana and so much more. Their most favourite trips though were to Aberdeen to visit Darcy, her husband Blaine, and their daughters Jesse, Melissa, and Devyn; and within Regina to spend time with Decklyn, his wife Michelle, and their daughter Chelsey; and back home to Churchbridge to see Darlene’s sister, brother, and their families.

The four granddaughters loved spending time with Grandma. There was so much to see and do at Grandma’s house with her hobbies of sewing, knitting and porcelain dolls. She was so talented at it all. She would make dresses, shirts, matching pyjamas, and so much more for the girls. A pattern would get tossed on her sewing room table with a piece of fabric, and in no time a little outfit or costume was created. All the girls tried their hand at the craft, with Grandma being such a patient and thoughtful teacher. Her sewing gene has been passed to Darcy and the youngest granddaughter Devyn, who have the natural gift she did. We all know Darlene would be so proud they are carrying on her passion. Another thing Darlene loved to do was make waffles with Log Cabin syrup on Saturday mornings for her granddaughters when they visited and stayed for sleepovers.

When Darcy was young, she and her mom made a tradition of going to Minot, ND for a shopping spree/girls’ weekend. This tradition continued with the Aberdeen granddaughters for seven awesome years, went on to be the most favourite time of year and will be some of the most fond and beloved memories. Among those great times also lays the warm reminiscing thoughts of Grandma taking her four granddaughters to Northgate Mall in Regina for lunch at Dairy Queen. After lunch she would make sure everyone received a Dilly Bar for dessert, now known as the “special memory” treat.

Darlene was such a special woman and is lovingly held in the hearts and memories by many, most notably her husband of 56 years Warren, her son Decklyn (Michelle), daughter Darcy (Blaine), granddaughters Jesse (Ben), Melissa (Andrew), Chelsey (Curtis) and Devyn, and great-grandchildren Noah, Levi, and Jordie, her sister Bertha (Bob) and numerous relatives and friends. She can now rest and will live on in our memories.

As per Darlene’s wishes there will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers, those so wishing may make memorial donations to a charity of your choice.
