Mary Teresa Meechan

February 27th, 2022

With sadness we announce the death of our mother, Mary, at the age of 99 after a short illness. Mary was born in Coatbridge, Scotland. When she was fourteen years old she went to England and worked as a maid in a large hotel and then went to work in a munitions factory when the war began. She married Kerwin Andrew Meechan and moved to Canada with him after the war. They settled in Milton, Ontario and remained there for most of their lives.

She raised three children and worked; first at Eatons, then in a fish & chips shop and lastly in a long-term care home until she retired. In 1996 she moved to Regina, SK where she lived until her death. Mary was always the life of the party, even when just having coffee with her friends in the Northgate Mall food court. She kept everyone laughing at her sayings and antics. She would never tell anyone how old she was, her answer was always “21 going on 100”. She never lost her Scottish accent but sometimes offered to sell it when people said they liked it. She moved to Parkview Villa during the pandemic and made friends there.

She loved animals, music and dancing and showed off her dancing skills whenever music was played.  She hated to miss watching Polkarama on Saturday nights. She really enjoyed gatherings of family and friends and loved to entertain them! She was always the life of the party, never a dull moment with Mom around. She always looked great, right down to the red lipstick and high heels.

She was predeceased by her parents Andrew and Katie Leckie, her brothers Philip (Chrissy) and James (Cathy) Leckie.  She leaves to mourn her children Brian (Debbie), Gord and Kate; grandchildren Colleen, Kimberley, Brian, Jordan (Amanda), Dairdree, Donovan (Deana), Joel (Denay) and great-grandchildren Kale, Ella, Riley, Kierra, Jake, Brooklynne, and Lexie.

A big thank you to the staff at Parkview Villa for their care of Mary over the last year and a half of her life. Also thanks to the wonderful nursing staff at the Palliative Care Unit, Regina Pasqua Hospital for their care and compassion during her short stay there.

A Celebration of Life will be held for family and friends on Friday, March 4, 2022 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. in the Serbian Club, 2775 Avonhurst Drive, Regina, SK.
